10 Practical Ways to Reduce Household Waste

Going zero-waste sounds great in theory, but it's not realistic for most families. What IS realistic is making gradual changes that reduce the amount of waste your household produces. Here are ten that actually work.

1. Plan Your Meals

Food waste is the single biggest component of household waste by weight. Planning meals for the week before shopping dramatically reduces the amount of food that goes uneaten and ends up in the bin.

2. Buy Loose Fruit and Veg

Supermarket packaging accounts for a huge amount of household plastic waste. Buying loose fruit and vegetables — which are usually cheaper per kilo anyway — cuts this significantly.

3. Use Refill Stations

Several shops in Glasgow offer refill stations for cleaning products, washing-up liquid, and laundry detergent. Bring your own bottles and fill up. It saves packaging and often works out cheaper.

4. Switch to Reusable Bags

Scotland's carrier bag charge has already cut bag usage dramatically, but single-use bags still appear. Keep reusable bags in your car, bag, or by the front door.

5. Compost Food Waste

If you have a garden, a compost bin turns food scraps into free compost. Even without a garden, your brown bin handles food waste that would otherwise go to landfill.

6. Buy Quality Over Quantity

Cheap items that break quickly generate more waste than quality items that last. This applies particularly to clothing, electronics, and furniture.

7. Repair Before Replacing

Glasgow has several repair cafes where volunteers fix clothing, small electricals, and household items for free. A repair extends an item's life by years and keeps it out of the waste stream.

8. Donate Before Disposing

Before binning something, ask whether someone else could use it. Charity shops, Freecycle, and Facebook Marketplace give items second lives.

9. Avoid Single-Use

Reusable water bottles, coffee cups, and food containers reduce the stream of disposable items passing through your home.

10. Recycle Correctly

Check what your council actually accepts in your recycling bin. Putting the wrong items in contaminates the load and can send everything to landfill. When in doubt, check or leave it out.
