The period between Christmas and New Year is when Glasgow homes are at their most cluttered. New gifts mean old items to shift, packaging fills every corner, and the Christmas tree has outstayed its welcome.
Christmas Tree Disposal
Glasgow City Council runs a free Christmas tree collection in January — dates vary each year. Alternatively, take your tree to any household waste recycling centre. Trees are chipped and composted. Remove all decorations, tinsel, and the stand before putting it out.
Packaging and Cardboard
Flatten all cardboard boxes and put them in your blue recycling bin. If you've got more than the bin can hold, tie it in bundles and leave it beside the bin on collection day. Polystyrene packaging can't be recycled in your blue bin — take it to a recycling centre or put it in general waste.
Wrapping Paper
The scrunch test: if wrapping paper scrunches into a ball and stays scrunched, it's recyclable. If it springs back (metallic or glitter paper), it goes in general waste. Ribbons, bows, and sellotape go in general waste.
Old Gifts and Replaced Items
New gifts replace old ones — the previous phone, the replaced kitchen gadget, the superseded toy. Working items can be donated to charity or sold on Facebook Marketplace. Broken electricals are WEEE and need proper disposal.
New Year Clear-Out
Use the momentum of the holidays to clear out other areas. January is our busiest month for house clearances and bulky uplifts as people start the new year with a declutter. Book early to avoid waiting.
