Why Pianos Are Different

An upright piano typically weighs 180-250kg; a grand piano can be considerably heavier. Unlike a sofa or wardrobe, weight is concentrated in a compact frame, which makes it genuinely dangerous to move without the right technique and equipment.

Can It Be Sold or Donated?

Working pianos in reasonable condition can sometimes be given away for free through local music schools, community centres, or online marketplaces — many people would rather rehome a piano than see it disposed of. If it hasn't been tuned or played in years and has damage, this becomes less realistic.

Metal components — the cast iron frame, strings, and hinges — are separated for scrap metal recycling. Felt, ivory-effect key coverings, and other mixed materials generally go to general waste.
