Fridge freezers aren't like other bulky waste — they contain refrigerant gases (CFCs or HFCs) that are harmful to the ozone layer if released. This means they fall under WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) regulations and need specialist handling.
Why You Can't Just Bin It
Under UK law, refrigerant gases must be safely extracted by a certified technician before the unit can be scrapped. Dumping a fridge in a skip or leaving it on the street is illegal and carries significant fines.
Your Options in Glasgow
**Council uplift** — Glasgow City Council will collect fridges and freezers as part of their bulky uplift service. Booking slots can take several weeks. **Recycling centres** — Dawsholm and Polmadie both accept fridges. You'll need to transport it yourself. **Professional removal** — We collect fridge freezers daily across Glasgow. We disconnect, carry out, and transport to a licensed WEEE facility.
What Happens During Recycling?
At a specialist facility, the refrigerant is extracted and either destroyed or reclaimed. The fridge is then shredded and the metals, plastics, and insulation foam are separated for recycling. Around 85% of a fridge freezer's materials can be recovered.
Getting a New One Delivered?
Most retailers offer to take your old fridge when delivering a new one, usually for a small fee. This is often the easiest option if you're buying a replacement. However, if the retailer doesn't offer this, or you need the old one removed before delivery day, give us a call.
Preparation Tips
Defrost the freezer compartment at least 24 hours before collection. Empty all food and remove shelves and drawers — these can go in your regular recycling. Keep the doors closed during transport to prevent damage to the seals.
