Not everything that you no longer need should go to waste. Glasgow has a strong network of charities and social enterprises that accept donations of furniture, clothing, electronics, and household goods. Donating extends the life of items and helps people in need.
Furniture & Large Items
**British Heart Foundation** — accepts and collects furniture, electricals, and clothing from across Glasgow. Free collection for qualifying items. **Furniture Plus Project** — Glasgow-based social enterprise providing affordable furniture to people on low incomes. **Re-Tek** — IT equipment specialists who refurbish and redistribute computers and electronics.
Clothing & Textiles
Most charity shops on Glasgow's high streets accept clean clothing in good condition. For larger quantities, textile banks are located at most supermarket car parks. The Salvation Army and Cancer Research both run regular clothing collections in Glasgow.
Books, DVDs & Media
Oxfam Bookshops (there are several across Glasgow) specifically want books, CDs, DVDs, and vinyl. Local libraries sometimes accept donations for their book sales.
What Charities Won't Take
Upholstered furniture without fire safety labels. Broken electricals. Stained or damaged mattresses. Items in poor condition that can't be resold. If you're unsure, phone ahead — charities would rather you check than turn up with unsuitable items.
What We Do With Reusable Items
When we collect waste, we always separate items that are in good enough condition to donate. These go to our local charity partners rather than to the waste facility. It's better for the environment and the community.
