Hoarding Clearance: A Compassionate Approach

Hoarding situations are some of the most sensitive jobs we're asked to help with. They're rarely simple, and they're never just about the volume of belongings involved — there's usually a person, and often a family, dealing with something much bigger than clutter.

Understanding, Not Judgement

Hoarding is recognised as a genuine psychological condition, not a lifestyle choice or a matter of laziness. Approaching a clearance with judgement makes an already difficult situation worse for everyone involved, including the person whose home it is.

Involving the Person Where Possible

Where the individual is able and willing to be involved, giving them some control over decisions — even small ones, like which room to start in — tends to make the process far less distressing than having everything decided for them.

Working with Family Members

Family often reach out to us on someone else's behalf, sometimes after a health scare, a housing situation coming to a head, or a landlord or council intervention. We work with whoever is coordinating, while remaining respectful of the person living in the property.

A Staged Approach

Rather than a single overwhelming clearance, hoarding situations are often better handled in stages — clearing access routes and immediate safety hazards first, then working through the rest of the property over subsequent visits.

Health and Safety Considerations

Long-term hoarding can create genuine hazards: blocked fire exits, structural strain from stored weight, pest issues, and unstable stacks of belongings. We assess these before starting and take extra care and time where needed.

What Happens to Belongings

As with any clearance, anything of value or sentimental significance is set aside rather than automatically discarded, and usable items go to charity partners. We never rush a decision about whether something stays or goes if there's any doubt.

Getting Support

Alongside the physical clearance, local social work teams and support organisations can offer ongoing help for the person involved. A clearance works best as part of a wider plan, not as a one-off fix.
