How to Dispose of Rubble and Concrete in Glasgow

Construction rubble — concrete, bricks, blocks, slabs, tiles, and stone — is heavy, bulky, and can't go in your household bins. But it's also one of the most recyclable construction materials, which means disposal doesn't have to be expensive.

Why It's Different From General Waste

Rubble is classified as 'inert waste' — it doesn't decompose, leach chemicals, or produce gas. This makes it cheaper to dispose of than mixed waste because it can go to specialist inert waste facilities rather than general landfill.

Recycling Options

Most concrete and brick rubble is crushed and used as aggregate for road construction, drainage, and backfill. Clean rubble (without timber, plasterboard, or plastic contamination) commands the lowest disposal charges because it can go straight to crushing.

Household Recycling Centres

Glasgow's recycling centres accept small amounts of rubble from domestic projects. There are usually limits on quantity per visit — check before loading up your car. They won't accept commercial quantities.

Professional Collection

For renovation rubble, we collect and transport it to licensed facilities. We price rubble loads separately from general waste because disposal costs differ. Keeping rubble separate from other waste (no wood, plasterboard, or plastic mixed in) gets you a better price.

Weight Warning

A cubic metre of rubble weighs approximately 1.5-2 tonnes. A seemingly small pile can be extremely heavy. Don't underestimate the weight when planning transport or loading vehicles — and don't overload your car or trailer.

Soil and Earth

Clean soil and subsoil are also classified as inert waste and can be recycled. Contaminated soil (from former industrial sites, fuel spills, etc.) requires specialist testing and disposal — this is a separate process entirely.
