Glasgow City Council operates several household waste recycling centres across the city. These are free to use for Glasgow residents, but there are rules about what you can bring and how you need to prepare.
Main Recycling Centre Locations
**Dawsholm** (off Maryhill Road, G20) — the largest and most popular. Can get very busy on weekends. **Polmadie** (off Polmadie Road, G42) — convenient for south-side residents. **Shieldhall** (off Renfrew Road, G51) — west-end access. **Easter Queenslie** (off Hallhill Road, G33) — serves the east end.
What You Need to Bring
Photo ID and proof of a Glasgow City Council address (utility bill, council tax letter). If you're using a van or trailer, you may need a permit — check the council website before visiting.
What They Accept
Most household waste including furniture, mattresses, electricals, garden waste, wood, metal, textiles, cardboard, glass, batteries, paint, oil, and small amounts of rubble. They do NOT accept commercial waste, asbestos, or large quantities of construction materials.
Opening Times
Most centres open 8am-6pm in summer and 8am-4pm in winter, seven days a week. Check the Glasgow City Council website for the latest hours as they can change seasonally.
Tips for a Smooth Visit
Go mid-week to avoid queues. Separate your items before arriving — staff will direct you to different skips for different materials. Be prepared to unload everything yourself. Wear sturdy shoes and bring gloves if handling rough materials.
When a Recycling Centre Isn't the Answer
If you don't have transport, have too much to carry, or the items are too heavy to handle alone, a professional collection service is the alternative. We can sort and dispose of mixed loads — you don't need to separate anything.
