Electrical items — from toasters to televisions — are classified as WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and have their own disposal rules. Throwing them in your household bin is illegal and harmful to the environment.
What Counts as WEEE?
Anything with a plug, battery, or cable: TVs, monitors, laptops, phones, tablets, printers, microwaves, kettles, hair dryers, power tools, and more. If it uses electricity, it's WEEE.
Small Electricals
Items smaller than a piece of A4 paper can be returned to any large electrical retailer — they're legally required to accept them, even without a purchase. Look for the WEEE collection bins near the entrance of Currys, Argos, or supermarkets.
Large Electricals
TVs, washing machines, dishwashers, and cookers need to go to a household waste recycling centre or be collected by a professional service. Most retailers will take your old appliance when delivering a new one.
Data Security
Before disposing of computers, phones, or tablets, make sure to factory reset them and remove any storage drives. If you're disposing of business IT equipment, we can arrange data destruction certificates.
Professional WEEE Collection
We collect electrical items of all sizes across Glasgow. Everything goes to a licensed WEEE facility where components are separated — metals recovered, plastics recycled, and hazardous materials like batteries and capacitors safely processed.
Why Proper Disposal Matters
Electronics contain valuable materials like copper, gold, and rare earth elements, but also hazardous substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium. Proper recycling recovers the valuable materials while preventing the harmful ones from leaching into soil and groundwater.
