A washing machine weighs between 60-90kg, making it one of the most difficult household items to dispose of yourself. Combined with WEEE regulations, professional removal is usually the sensible choice.
Retailer Take-Back
If you're buying a new washing machine, most retailers (Currys, AO, John Lewis) will remove your old one for a small fee — typically £15-20. This is often the simplest option if you're getting a replacement.
Council Collection
Glasgow City Council collects large appliances as part of their bulky uplift service. You'll need to disconnect the machine, drain any remaining water, and have it accessible at ground level. Waiting times can be several weeks.
Scrap Metal Dealers
Some local scrap merchants will collect a washing machine for free because of the metal value. Check local listings, but be wary of unlicensed operators — they must have a waste carrier's licence.
Our Service
We disconnect, carry out, and transport washing machines to a licensed WEEE recycling facility. Same-day service available. We handle the full process — you don't need to disconnect plumbing or drain the machine.
Recycling Process
At a recycling facility, washing machines are dismantled. The steel drum, motor, and frame are recovered for metal recycling. Circuit boards are processed for precious metals. Concrete counterweights are crushed and reused. Very little ends up in landfill.
