What Is a Waste Transfer Note and Why It Matters

A waste transfer note is one of those documents that people rarely think about until they need it — usually when something's gone wrong. Here's what it is, why it exists, and why you should always ask for one.

What It Records

A waste transfer note documents what waste was collected, who collected it, where it came from, and where it's going next. It's a legal requirement under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 for any transfer of controlled waste between parties.

Why It Exists

The transfer note system creates a paper trail for waste, from the point it leaves your property to its final disposal or recycling destination. This makes it possible to trace waste back to its source if it's ever found dumped illegally.

Your Legal Duty of Care

Under UK law, everyone has a duty of care for the waste they produce, even as a private householder handing it to a collection service. If your waste ends up fly-tipped and there's no transfer note, you can be held partly responsible.

What to Check

Ask for a waste transfer note every time you use a rubbish removal service, and check it matches the company's SEPA waste carrier registration number. A company that won't provide one, or seems reluctant, is a red flag.

How Long to Keep It

Businesses are legally required to keep waste transfer notes for at least two years. As a private individual it's good practice to keep yours for a similar period, just in case any dispute arises later.

Our Approach

Every collection we carry out comes with a waste transfer note as standard, whether it's a single sofa or a full house clearance. It's proof that your waste was handled legally and gives you peace of mind.
