Scrap metal is one of the most valuable recyclable materials. In Glasgow, there's a strong network of licensed scrap dealers and recycling facilities ready to process metals from domestic and commercial sources.
What Metals Can Be Recycled?
Almost all metals are recyclable: steel, iron, aluminium, copper, brass, lead, zinc, and stainless steel. Common sources include old radiators, pipes, guttering, car parts, appliances, tools, and structural steel from renovations.
Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013
Under this legislation, scrap dealers in Scotland must be licensed, verify your identity, and keep detailed records. Cash payments for scrap metal are banned — all payments must be traceable (bank transfer or cheque). This law was introduced to combat metal theft.
Where to Take Scrap Metal
Glasgow has several licensed scrap merchants. You can also take small amounts of metal to household recycling centres. For larger quantities — renovation waste, demolition materials, industrial equipment — a professional collection service is more practical.
How Much Is Scrap Metal Worth?
Prices fluctuate with global commodity markets. Copper and brass are the most valuable per kilo. Steel and iron are worth less per kilo but are collected in larger volumes. A full radiator might fetch a few pounds; a batch of copper pipe significantly more.
Our Approach
When we collect waste containing metal — radiators, pipes, old fencing, appliances — we separate it at our transfer station for specialist metal recycling. The value of recovered metals helps keep our overall prices competitive.
